covid-19 sports impact

February 3, 2021

Good morning Bret Harte student athletes and families,

We hope this email finds you and your family well. We appreciate your patience and flexibility as we continue to maneuver the ever-changing state and local public health guidelines related to educational athletics during COVID-19.

League’s Return to Sports Plan

The Mother Lode League met on Monday, February 1st and approved a return to sports plan within the guidelines issued by the California Department of Public Health on December 14, 2020. To read the guidelines, visit www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CID/DCDC/Pages/COVID-19/outdoor-indoor-recreational-sports.aspx. To review and summarize: (1) All sports were placed into four (4) categories or color tiers, that coincide with California’s use of county tier assignments: Purple = Widespread, Red = Substantial; Orange = Moderate; and Yellow = Minimal. (2) Calaveras County’s current tier assignment (Purple, Red, Orange or Yellow) will dictate which sports can proceed or not. (3) Our Section deferred to the League to determine seasons of sports, which was approved on Monday.

COVID-19 Sports Impact: Updated

We have prepared an updated “COVID-19 Sports Impact” infographic that explains the League-approved return to sports plan we will be following. Revised game schedules TBA. After approved, schedules can be found at https://bhhs-bhuhsd-ca.schoolloop.com/athletics.* A few things to note:* (1) The League requires that two of the three League counties - Amador, Calaveras and Tuolumne - must be in their allowable color tier of play to proceed with the season. (2) The must be a 10-day "athletic" quarantine period between Season 1 and Season 2 sports. (*Updated 2/9/2021)

Student Athlete Clearances

All student athletes must be cleared for the 2020-2021 athletic season to participate. To register your student athlete(s), please go to https://bhhs-bhuhsd-ca.schoolloop.com/athleticregistration. Student athletes CANNOT condition, tryout, practice or compete until the athletic registration is complete, with a current sports physical on file, and cleared by Athletics. NO EXCEPTIONS!

For program-specific questions, please contact the head coach. Contact information can be found at https://bhhs-bhuhsd-ca.schoolloop.com/coaches.

Pending

We are still working on the following items and will provide updates as soon as possible:  (1) Spectators – We have not received approval regarding the presence of spectators at home and/or away contests. (2) Transportation – We are still putting together a department plan for student athlete transportation to away contests. Thank you to those that completed our transportation survey last month!

As expected, changes may be made anytime to the current return to sports plan and/or the revised schedules.

Dear Bret Harte Athletic Families:

As we anticipate the start of the modified Winter and Spring seasons - League and possibly non-League competition - we face the logistical challenge of transportation under State and local COVID-19 restrictions. We respectfully ask you to complete a parent/guardian survey to help us discover the transportation needs of our student athletes as we anticipate the delayed start of one and/or all athletic programs this school year.

Please complete the survey at your earliest convenience at https://forms.gle/dR7DdAqD3T5fGzNJA.  Please complete a survey for each student athlete enrolled at Bret Harte.

COVID-19 Changes to Note:

1.  Due to CA Department of Public Health guidelines, ONLY ONE SPORT CAN BE PLAYED per modified season.

2.  Parent/guardian(s) will ONLY be able transport their OWN student athlete(s) to away contests. Carpooling will not be allowed.

While we wait for the regional stay-at-home order to be lifted by the State, we will continue to plan and prepare until we are given the “green light” to proceed. Thank you for your continued patience, understanding and support.

December 2, 2020

Good morning Bret Harte student athletes and families,

We hope this email finds you and your family happy and healthy. Just like you, we have been anxiously waiting for confirmation from the CIF and/or Sac-Joaquin Section that the modified Winter Season 2020-2021 will proceed next week as scheduled.

We received an update from the CIF late yesterday, December 1, 2020 indicating that “all full practice and competition start dates are officially on hold until updated [California Department of Public Health] guidance is issued.” To read the full release go to https://www.cifstate.org/covid-19/12.1.20_release.

Consequently, outdoor pre-season conditioning will continue for those programs/teams that elect to offer conditioning. Program or team-specific questions can be directed to the head coach. Head coach contact information can be found at https://bhhs-bhuhsd-ca.schoolloop.com/coaches. All student athletes must be cleared for the 2020-2021 athletic season to participate in conditioning. To register your student athlete(s), please go to https://bhhs-bhuhsd-ca.schoolloop.com/athleticregistration. Current sports physicals can be uploaded into the registration or dropped off to the school office.

We anticipate another update from the CIF on or before Friday, January 1, 2021. We will communicate the update to our student athletes and families thereafter. As expected, any revised sports calendar(s) are subject to change by the CIF, Sac-Joaquin Section or Calaveras County Public Health.

In summary, they have condensed the traditional three (3) seasons of sports into two (2) seasons - winter and spring. The winter season is set to begin in December 2020. During this year’s modified winter season, the following Bret Harte athletic programs will compete: Cross Country, Football, Volleyball and Water Polo. All other programs will compete during the modified spring season with varied start dates. Basketball, Soccer, Tennis and Wrestling will begin in February 2021. Baseball, Golf, Softball, Swimming and Track & Field will begin in March 2021.

Coming in Fall 2021: Bret Harte eSports

eSports is the world of competitive, organized video gaming. This is a CIF sanctioned sport, just like football or soccer - it is a legitimate competition. The team will play in a league organized through PlayVS, who operates the only varsity high school esports leagues in the United States.

The founding coaches of the program at Bret Harte are Christina Telezinski and David Duggan. The program is to begin competition in the Fall of 2021. The games played differ each season and can range from popular, team-oriented multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs), to survival battle royales, to virtual reconstructions of physical sports. Currently the offered competitive titles include Madden NFL 21, FIFA 21, League of Legends, Rocket League, and SMITE.
