SAT/ACT/FAFSA/UC/CSU Important Dates 2018-19

CSS Profile for financial aid

Seniors applying to private colleges should check to see if the university requires a CSS Profile as part of their financial aid process.  The deadline to submit this varies from institution to institution but many of them have early November deadlines for students applying early action or early decision.  Complete the CSS Profile and submit  to the colleges that require it!

Official Transcript Requests

Students who need official transcripts sent to universities need to see Mrs. Brooksher.  Make sure to complete a transcript request form!   Athletes who need official transcripts uploaded to the NCAA or NAIA Eligibility Center need to see Mrs. Millar.

Merit Co-Op Scholarship Program

Seniors interested in Co-op programs (combine education and work experience in most professional fields) at nine highly ranked universities are encouraged to apply to the WACE National Co-op Scholarship Program.  160 merit scholarships are available.  A 3.5 GPA is required and you must meet the application deadlines at one of the nine participating universities and submit your scholarship application by February 15, 2019.  Information is available online or see Mrs. Millar.  Early applications are highly encouraged!

Naval Academy operation Information

Navy Officer, Carson Wood,  who attended BHHS will present information on the opportunities at the US military academies and explain the application process.  Best practices for securing a nomination and how to become a stand out candidate will be discussed.  High achieving underclassman that are not in AP US History should see Mrs. Millar for a pass.  APUSH students do not need a pass as the presentation will be during your class on Monday, November 26th at 8:55 am.

ROTC Scholarship Presentation

Students interested in securing a $180k scholarship to pay for college are invited to attend a presentation by the Navy/Marines on NROTC scholarships that can be used at any university that has an NROTC program.  If you want to be an officer in the Navy or Marines this is an opportunity you do not want to miss.  The presentation is at 2 PM on November 28th.  Sign up on Mrs. Millar's board!  Freshman through seniors are welcome!

Junior Advisory Board

Juniors interested in joining a Junior Advisory Board at IE University in Madrid Spain during April 2019 are invited to submit an application by January 20, 2019.  Students will be immersed in a university environment, participate in workshops to develop their soft skills, and share their ideas about the future of higher education.  All expenses will be paid and students also have the opportunity to win an 80% scholarship for an IEU bachelor's degree!  Apply at  See Mrs. Millar if you have questions.

National college fair

The San Francisco Bay Area National College Fair is scheduled for April 6, 2019 from 1:30-4:30 pm at the Santa Clara Convention Center.  Registration is now open and is free!  This is your opportunity to connect with over 400 college representatives!  College bound freshman through juniors should take advantage of this opportunity to explore a variety of colleges from across the nation.

Regional college fairs

The WACAC College Fairs are in the spring.  UOP is a host site on Monday, April 29, 2019.  Registration will open in January for all Northern California sites.  We will have more information available later this winter for our students to attend the UOP fair.

Showcasing Scholarship Opportunities

This section showcases outstanding scholarships available at the regional and national level and will be changed periodically.  A full list of scholarships is available on the scholarship link on the left side of the webpage.

The Elks Most Valuable (MVS) application closes on November 15, 2018.  500 scholarships ranging in value from $4000-$50,000 are available.  Apply here.

Seniors planning to major in engineering are encouraged to apply for the San Joaquin Engineers Scholarship.  Six $2000 scholarships will be awarded.  Applications 

Seniors with a 3.5 GPA or higher and who have a minimum ACT of 23 or 1150 SAT with a FAFSA documented financial need are strongly encouraged to apply for a Hagen scholarship.  Up to $6000/semester, study abroad assistance, and additional investment funds are available.  The deadline for applications is November 15, 2018.  This scholarship targets students from rural areas and 1 in 3 applicants receive funding! Apply online.  Stop in Mrs. Millar's office for questions or assistance with your application.

Is education important to you?  How would you like the chance to win a $5000 scholarship?  Unigo is sponsoring the scholarship and all you have to do is submit an online written response to the question:  "What would you say to someone who thinks education doesn't matter, or that college is a waste of time and money?" (250 words or less).  The deadline to apply is November 30, 2018.  All grade levels are eligible to participate!  The link is posted on the Career Center Webpage.  See Mrs. Millar if you have questions.

Seniors planning to attend a California Community College are encouraged to enter the SNAPS for College Scholarship contest.  Top prize is $5000.  Weekly prizes are also up for grabs.  Registration  Click the Snaps for College banner and follow the prompts. Contest closes December 30, 2018.

Beverage Industry College Scholarships are available to students who have a parent or grandparent that work at any industry that holds a California beverage license.  Applications are available here.  The deadline is February 15, 2019.  A Bret Harte alum has been a past winner!

Elk's Legacy award scholarships in the amount of $4000 for children and grandchildren of Elks members are available.  The deadline to apply is February 1, 2019.  25 scholarships are available in the California-Hawaii region.  Three winners have been selected locally in the last two years!

Women specific scholarship are available.  Deadlines, rules and scholarship amounts vary.  

Bret Harte Class of 2020, have you started thinking about college and the steps you need to take to make your dreams a reality?  By completing a step in a new Collegeboard program you have the opportunity to win a scholarship worth $500-$2,000; complete all six steps and you could win $40,000.  No essay or minimum GPA is required!  Register


The Bret Harte Memorial Scholarship

The Bret Harte Memorial Scholarship is a donation-based scholarship  awarded annually by the BH Scholarship Committee to deserving students who qualify by GPA and  have plans to continue their education at either a college or a career tech program.  Students must have demonstrated  financial need.  The number of scholarships and the award amount are based on the number of donations that are received year-by-year.  Please donate if you can.
