The sprint: one word: speed. The "track" will be 7 meters long and one meter wide on a smooth surface.

There is an excellent book cited below with amazing examples of engineering concepts including gear ratios which may provide food for thought.

The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Idea Book: 181 Simple Machines and Clever Contraptions by Yoshihito Isogawa

Look on the Amazon link and peak through the “Look Inside” section, and I think you will experience the same excitement I had when I stumbled across this. Please note that while the title says “EV3”, the concepts transfer fluidly to NXT builders.

The object of the maze competition uis for the robot is to start at the opening, travel through the above maze or ots reverse image, reach the dead end, and return to start as a timed event.

Students can utilize the touch, ultrasonic, and/or infrared sensors. There is another great book to consider which gives clearly written discussion on sensor use:

The line follower: Described as a classic problem in which ambitious students can be challenged, the lines for the robots can be found and printed here.

The track has been completed, and photos will be posted soon.

An incredible book with specific chapters dedicated to the line follower program may be an irreplaceable resource.
